Wooden
Shoes
(as recalled by Alfred Gerwing)
It
is well documented that Grandpa (Heinrich Gerwing) was
skilled at making wooden shoes. He practiced his craft in
the late 1800's while living near Pierz Minnesota USA. Pa
(Joseph Gerwing Sr.) told us that Heinrich required his
boys to wear wooden shoes to school. Most of the other
children wore leather shoes. The wood shoes were not in
style and some children made fun of them. However, wearing
wooden shoes did have one advantage. Whenever a bully
threatened, the Gerwing boys merely had to brandish a hard
wooden shoe in their direction to settle the matter.
